The Future of Stellar Reaches (or Where’s Issue #8?)

Good Morning, All:

This weekend, I received some very important news that impacts the future of the Stellar Reaches fanzine. The Fair Use policy that allowed me to publish material for the Official Traveller Universe (the OTU) is no longer valid. Mongoose Publishing now has sole rights to the OTU setting, and since I do not have a pre-existing license from Marc Miller to publish OTU material, I cannot include any OTU material in future issues of Stellar Reaches, which includes Issue #8. Since most of the submitted material takes place in the OTU, I cannot use it in its current form.

Under the Traveller OGL, we may use any game mechanics covered in the SRD once it is released, to create and publish for any setting of our own creation, so long as it does not reference the Official Traveller Universe in any form or fashion.

Stellar Reaches will remain as a Traveller fanzine, and will publish fan-generated material for free, as it always has. I am also willing to work with others to publish your Traveller material for profit through my imprint Samardan Press, on terms that can be worked out on a case-by-case basis.

I will be releasing some Traveller material set in a universe of my own creation within the next few months. If you like what you see, and would be interested in contributing to the universe I am creating, please feel free to make article submissions to future issues of Stellar Reaches, or contact me directly with a proposal for a possible supplement or adventure to publish and make a few bucks in the process.

If you have submitted an Official Traveller Universe article that you would like to revise and resubmit, you are more than welcome to do so. I would be greatly appreciative.

Yours In Service,
Jason “Flynn” Kemp,
Editor, Stellar Reaches fanzine

It would seem to me that a T20 / Gurps:Traveller / Hero Traveller fanzine would still be able to publish under their respective licenses (assuming that THEIR respective fair use policies allow it). I’m curious to see how this plays out.

  2. Bah, Typical, this is going to stop me buying anything mongoose, also the adventure I submitted (which I thought was really good) was a lot of work not to have an audience, can we drop the stats and publish it as a system less article.

P.S. what type of stuff do you want for Samardan Press, can you give us an overview of your sci-fi universe so we can submit useful stuff to it.

    Cheers

Regarding your adventure, I can easily work with you to drop the OTU-specific components and we can release your adventure in a generic setting that could easily be adapted to play in the OTU or someone else’s ATU. No problems there. I definitely want to see your work get out there.

Bear in mind that certain elements of the OTU (such as certain alien races and the UWPs) are already part of the Open Game Content through Traveller T20, and that can’t be revoked. We can’t use the OTU background, as the background hasn’t been released as Open Game Content, but we can mention the alien races that have been released through QLI’s work.

In regards to what I’ll be releasing for Samardan Press, I am currently working on a frontier sector on the edge of the human-dominated Dracosian Republic. There are a number of other polities in the sector that resemble in some regards a microcosm of classic tropes common to many sci-fi universes, including the OTU. There’s a warrior society, a race of psionic humans, several smaller non-human polities to visit and interact with, and more. The average TL doesn’t hit higher than TL13, but there’s a xenophobic culture with TL15-ish, and a background that supports ruins with extreme TLs. I wanted to create a setting where one could more easily use material from other Traveller sources, and which would allow gamers to use the material in their own Traveller games.

I am considering releasing a quadrant of the Azri Drakara sector as a preview in the next issue of Stellar Reaches. I’ll try to give more details later, if it will help. In the meantime, if you have any specific questions, please feel free to ask.

    With Regards,
    Flynn

    Hi Flynn,

Have you approached Andy Lilly to see if you can’t progress Stellar Reaches in some way?

    Worth an email at least.

    Hope this Helps

    Best Regards
