Strange Love

Heading to battlefields to give succor to the losers — people who despise your own religion — is strange indeed.

All these people here have fled Isis. They all belong to Isis but one of the great stories is that Jesus loves them and got us here.

Thus, care & medical attention after (well-earned) bombing raids.

I’m quite sure that the vast majority of nonhumans within the Imperium see the Solomani as utterly insane.

Still, assuming they cut down the racial supremacist attitude (as the Solomani who built the Third Imperium did), liberty-oriented Solomani-culture rulers are certainly to be preferred to conformity-oriented Vilani-style rulers.

Addendum One: I wonder what happens when cultures are disconnected from their original populations. There are definitely many Vargr who follow Vilani cultural mores: I’m sure that there are many more “Vilani of culture, not race”, as the Vilani love to spread their way of thinking.

A case can be made that language transmits culture: as such, American English has quite a lot of cultural influence, even as French (for example) declines, while Arabic continues to stagnate. But the real question is about Chinese. The spoken language isn’t too hard, but its written form really cripples its spread and growth.

Modern Vilani has brought in a lot of Solomani concepts and ideas, to successfully compete with the various forms of Anglic. This allows the Vilani to remain a living culture (compared to the dead language of Latin Old High Vilani). But on the other hand, Modern Vilani, like most Imperials, is a mixed language.

The Vilani love the old ways: but in truth, you can’t go home again.

Addendum Two: As we all know, the Solomani Rim War involved the deaths of many, many billions over the use of language: in essence, the exact definition of the word “people”.

I had once preferred a simple definition, myself: “a son of Adam”. But that isn’t a good Biblical definition, for two reasons. First, from Genesis…

God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. Let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the sky, over the livestock, over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” God created man in his own image. In his own image he created him. Male and female he created them. God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful, and multiply. Fill the earth, and subdue it. Have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the sky, and over every living thing that moves upon the earth” (Genesis 1:26–28).

From the Unlocked Literal Bible translation

Put simply: the image of God we manifest is shown by our actions, by filling, subduing, and having dominion over the earth.

(And not by having The Right Men gain dominion over other men, as the statist Greeks or Muslims would have it.)

The focus is on actions. Not genetic lineage.

And secondly: the natural sons of Adam are disinherited, and damned to hell. Only the adopted sons of God, led by the only begotten son of God, Jesus Christ, have a future worth talking about.

So, people are defined by actions, not genetics. And salvation is determined by adoption by God, and not by our own will or origins.

Addendum Three: One of the things that make the Solomani insane is their focus on Love and Justice and Liberty, not Power or Survival or Stability or Safety or Efficiency.

Really, this is really just the focus of (the better) Christians among the Solomani. But this insanity has brought them success in history, as well as eternity.

It also makes for interesting adventures in the real world (see the video above) as well as in fiction.
